Review of Unholy Embrace Five Neil Benson _ BK Walker books by Paula Phillips

An excellent story that shows readers in a paranormal and supernatural way that no matter what happens, and how terrifying obstacles can be, love between mortals and immortals can overcome anything.

The story starts when Frank and Nessa are on a date and werewolves attack them. The attack causes Nessa to extract her fangs and go 'all -vampirey', something Frank had not experienced before.

From then on, we are transported back to the beginning - where they met and how their relationship started, and how they reached this point in the story. What follows is Nessa explaining her 400-year-old history to Frank and how she became a vampire in Hungary. It follows her travels to Vienna, Paris, and eventually to New York.

When Frank realizes the consequences and dangers of being with Nessa, can he stand strong and embrace the unholiness of being with a vampire - or will he take the white feather option out and leave to follow a path of normal life.

Unholy Embrace - Nessa the vampire battles and immortal demon

Frank, deceived by the demon, opens the door and all hell breaks loose.

“Frank, I told you not to unlock the door,” Nessa said.

When the demon turned to face her, she reached inside her pocket and withdrew gold powder she threw at it. The demon put its hands in front of its face and shook its head. Nessa threw more powder on the creature and chanted in Latin. The Huli Jing was unable to move, and smoke came off its body and arms. She threw more powder on the demon while she continued chanting. The demon, covered in the fine gold powder, hunched its shoulders while contracting into a tighter mass. As it did so, the smoke continued to increase.

Nessa pulled a silver dagger out of her coat and stabbed the demon in the chest. It emitted a loud, “Hhhhcccchhh,” sound. Greenish fluid flowed down its chest, but the hole made by the knife closed up.

She stabbed at it again. This time the demon grabbed the end of the dagger, broke it off, and tossed it away. Nessa clenched her fist.

The Huli Jing shook its body. Some fine gold powder flew into the air, and smoke coming off it decreased. The demon became brighter and brighter until it was almost impossible to look at. The creature hissed at Nessa, and she bared her fangs and snarled.

Her knees buckled, and she pulled her cape over her head. The light created by the demon intensified, and Nessa fell backward into what remained of the doorway. The demon struggled to move towards her, hindered by the remaining golden dust on it.

Human Frank Thornton and vampire Nessa Harcanu hold hands as they walk together at night in Manhattan. He knows his beloved is a centuries old vampire, but has not witnessed at all what that means until this evening. Werewolves attack them, but Nessa overpowers them; shaking Frank with her abilities.

They met three weeks earlier with both attracted at first sight. Now he needs to know why the assault. Nessa honestly thinks a serial killing demon she hunts sent the horde. He thinks about leaving her, but cannot as he loves her though he wonders if she is using her vampiric enchantress skills to manipulate his desires. Still Frank tells her he cannot convert, but wants to be with her. She explains the demon is not her worst nightmare. Her sire, who she killed back in 1627 after he converted her and sucked dry her husband, left behind a raging predator the “widow” Narice who wants to destroy her for killing the Master; Frank is her Achilles Heel.

This is an exhilarating urban fantasy filled with demons, werewolves and vampires; oh, my! Frank is a terrific human who feels as if he fell through the rabbit hole when he fell in love while Nessa is an honest vampiress who tells him the truth. Although there is too much going on with the lead couple as the demon hunters and as the Narice hunted, sub-genre fans will enjoy this tale of blood and romance flowing on the streets of Manhattan.

Unholy Embrace by Neil Benson is the story of a romantic and dangerous love affair between a beautiful, ages-old vampire and a mortal man. This story is enchanting and sexy with an edge of excitement. Not only do we read about vampires but of werewolves and demons. The New York nightlife and seedy underbelly do well to create a dangerous atmosphere. I enjoyed reading about the main character’s blossoming relationship but also the horrific demons and monsters that lurk about in the night. Nessa Harcanu is the sexy vampire born in 1597 in a small town near Budapest.

Though Nessa is voluptuous and sultry, she posses a power beyond mortal imagination. She becomes involved with a mortal man named Frank Thornton who is an attractive architect that is skeptical about the existence of vampires and demons. Also joining the story are members of the Meyer family of which Nessa becomes close with early on in her life as a vampire; they come to serve her and assist her with her needs throughout the ages. We also come across a weaker vampire named Narice whom, after her master is killed by Nessa, begins following Nessa waiting to exact her revenge. There are a few other characters we run across in the story who serve as a backdrop in the evolvement of the two main characters. The interaction with these other characters gives us insight to the character’s lives and personalities.

Nessa’s tale of how she became a vampire and her life up until present day is one of intrigue and even sadness. Frank listens to Nessa’s story and becomes even more enchanted with her and begins to understand her a little better. Their relationship is really one of master and subservient, Nessa the master and Frank the subservient. Even with the uneven balance of power the relationship between the two becomes stronger and the need to protect one another grows. The appearance of a demon creates more drama and trouble for the two and they realize in order to save humanity they must defeat this demon in any way possible.

I would classify this story as less horror and more romantic suspense but it is still a wonderful and exciting tale. As I delved deeper into the book I found it hard to put down. It is definitely an easy read and isn’t cluttered with unnecessary plot and lag time. There were times of some light eroticism mixed in with story to give it an edge above the teeny-bopper vampire love stories. Also we examine great power within Nessa making her almost super-heroine like in her conquests. Frank’s mind is torn between his deep love of Nessa and his wish for normalcy in his life. My only complaint as far as this novel was concerned was that I felt that the ending was a tad rushed; I felt that maybe the writer was a little unsure of how to resolve the conflict without creating more trouble for the characters.

Neil Benson has a rare talent for creating a story where you can identify and truly care about what happens to the characters. Giving life to character’s like Nessa and Frank enables the reader to walk in the footsteps of the characters, getting more in-depth in the story and almost being able to see the world through their eyes. I would also have to give Neil Benson props on creating a dueling perspective between the characters; by doing this we can see the story from the perspective of both Nessa and Frank. I would highly recommend this book to all vampire lovers out there and especially those who enjoy romantic flights of fancy.

Unholy Embrace - a vampire novel - a succubus appears

The plot thickens as a succubus enters the story.

As I glanced at the people around me, I spied a blonde haired, woman wearing a low-cut, strapless, violet gown, staring at Nessa. Her pale face looked as if sunlight had never touched it. I wondered what was going on.

“Why is that woman looking at you so intently?”

“Because I am a threat to her,” she said, returning the woman's gaze.

“How so?” What's going on, I wondered.

“She's a succubus who has subjugated the man with her. She’s afraid I might expose her.”

“I thought succubi and incubi were creatures of myth.” I gulped. “Besides, aren’t they supposed to be incorporeal beings that come to their victims in the night?” One moment we enjoyed our intimacy, the next we discussed demonology about a woman not twenty feet away.

“They can only manifest themselves if they ingest enough energy. Even then, they usually maintain a solid state for short periods of time. Look at the man she’s with. See how white he is. His pallor is not from lack of sunlight. She’s drained a substantial portion of his life energy.”

“That's Harry, an acquaintance of mine. Is there something you can do to save him?” How could he have gotten himself entangled with a demon? 

“I can kill her. Even so, he might never be the same.”

“Is she dangerous to you?”

“Hardly. She can't possibly hurt me." The tone of her laugh chilled me.

“What are you going to do?”

“I'm going to tell her to leave him or I will destroy her.”

I still found it difficult to accept her lethal potential. Despite her grace and elegant allure, she was a powerful vampire. When she took a few steps forward, the woman whispered to Harry and they exited the garden.

Nessa turned to me and smiled, as if nothing unusual had happened.

Unholy Embrace - A vampire novel by Neil Benson - Nessa Describes her meeting with Pablo Picasso

When you live for centuries as I have, your see firsthand how art continuously evolves. The Impressionists, whom I loved dearly, had their moment in the sun, and then the next Revolution in art began. Pablo Picasso, at the forefront of current changes, unveiled a new concept with his Blue Period paintings. After moving to Paris in 1904, he frequented the home of Gertrude and Leo Stein.

One Saturday night, I saw him on the other side of the room. He looked at me, gestured to Gertrude, and they walked in my direction. I smiled inwardly, wondering what he had in mind. Pablo had a notorious reputation as a seducer of women.

“Nessa, this is my good friend Pablo Picasso,” Gertrude said.

“Mr. Picasso, it is a pleasure to meet you. I have seen your work, and I think it is marvelous.”

“I do not think that would be a good idea.”

“Many times women say no when they really mean yes.” His fingers strayed from my arm to my breast.

When I took hold of his fingers and squeezed, his eyes opened wide. “Gentlemen should always understand the meaning of the word no.”

After snatching his fingers from my grasp, he turned about and walked away.

Unholy Embrace - A woman describes her night of terror

1627  Nessa describes a night of terror and how she became a vampire.

Kalman and I sat by the fire enjoying each other's company. The door burst open, destroying our peaceful evening. A tall, bald, hideous creature stood in the doorway staring at us. When he snarled, he revealed two-inch fangs. I knew he was one of the undead and had come for our blood.

Kalman screamed. “Nessa, run!”

He grabbed an iron poker, trying to strike him, but the vampire swatted it out of his hand. He grabbed Kalman and bit his neck until he was dead. I grabbed the poker from the floor and rushed at the creature. The vampire dropped Kalman and hit me on the side of the head, and I lost consciousness.

I awoke to the sight of the vampire sucking the last of Kalman's blood. When I screamed, the vampire turned towards me, his fangs dripping blood, and he snarled once more as he came closer. The creature grabbed my bodice, opened his mouth, and I knew I was going to die. However, he stopped, stroked my face with a long talon-like fingernail, and said, “You're too lovely to kill.” He swung me over his shoulder, kicked away the remains of the front door, and carried me into the night.

The vampire walked swifter than any human, covering several miles before we approached a cave. He set me on the ground. Then he pushed aside a boulder that would have taken four strong men to move. We entered a dark cave, but he moved without hesitation until a woman called out to him.

 “Narice, I have brought you a companion,” he said in a deep, raspy voice, and then dumped me on the ground.

Stunned, but not hurt, when I landed on the floor, I discovered it 234was covered by several inches of dirt. Terrified because I couldn't see anything, I tried to move away when the woman's hand touched me. I backed into a wall, remaining motionless, shivering until I finally fell asleep.

When I awoke, I heard no noise or movement. I crawled along the floor until I felt the vampire lying with his arms folded across his chest. He and the woman lying next to him were still. I sat back against the wall and cried, unable to believe the nightmare in which I found myself.

I could not shut out the image of my beloved husband with his throat ripped open. Later, I felt disoriented and feverish. There was a throbbing sensation on the right side of my neck. I felt two puncture holes, and I realized he had taken some of my blood. The fever worsened, and I lay on the ground semiconscious for several days.

When the fever passed, I regained my senses. I knew I had changed because I could see in the dark and experienced a craving I couldn't explain.

The vampire returned and grabbed my hand and dragging me into the night. He told me to wait by a tree, and then he walked into the forest. The cold night air didn't bother me. I heard the vampire stepping on twigs long before I could see him. He returned carrying an unconscious deer. When he put the deer's neck in front of my face, I bit into it without thinking. The blood flowing through my new fangs felt natural. After a while, I was sated. He drained the remaining blood from the deer, and took me back to the cave.

When we returned, he stood before me and said, “You are a vampire and will live forever. I have given you a precious gift.”

I didn't respond, horrified by what I had done and my craving for blood.

He hadn't given me a gift, but rather made me into a dreadful creature.

Unholy Embrace - novel - a mortal man meets a vampire

A mortal, Frank, enters a wannabe vampire bar in Manhattan and finds himself scrutinized by a beautiful real vampire.

“You're not an overgrown boy or a self-styled stud eager to add me to his sexual trophy case.”

“You can tell that just by looking at me?”

“That and much more.”

“Okay, tell me what you know.” Her gaze caught mine as I issued the challenge.

“You're an architect in his mid-thirties who would rather be a painter,” she said without hesitation. She leaned back in her chair, steepling her fingers, her bright green eyes studying my every move.

“How do you know that?” Was she a mind reader or something?“There are traces of light green ocher paint under the nails of your index and middle fingers on your right hand.” I couldn't see anything, even when I held my nails under a light.

“I have excellent vision, especially at night.”

“There's nothing there to see,” I said.

“You failed to wash off all the ocher and pale yellow egg tempera paint you used.” She licked her lips.

Nessa had just described the colors I had been working with earlier in the evening. “I don't know how you guessed what I was using, but there's no way anyone could see the paint in this dim light.”

“A vampire could.” She leaned forward, opening her mouth, and showing the tips of sharp pointed fangs.

“Are those real?” I asked in a voice barely a croak. My heart beat faster and the hairs on the nape of my neck stood up.

“Hush,” Nessa said, as if she could hear my thoughts. She brushed my cheek with her fingertips, pressed her lips to mine, and parted them with her tongue.

 In the last post, we met Frank, a tall, young architect who learns that the beautiful woman he is sitting with in a bar with is a real vampire. She suggests they go to Frank's place. He agrees, providing evidence of the old saying "When the little head wakes up, the big head goes to sleep."
